Chat2Doc vs ChatExport AI — a fair, detailed comparison (2026)

If you’re looking at AI chat export Chrome extensions in 2026, two come up repeatedly: Chat2Doc and ChatExport AI. They look similar at first glance — both promise one-click export from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Grok to documents. The differences are in the details that matter.

Disclosure: I build ChatExport AI. I’ll be straight about where Chat2Doc is the right pick and where it isn’t.

Feature breakdown

Platform coverage

Chat2Doc: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok — 5 platforms.

ChatExport AI: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Copilot, Kimi, Qwen, Yuanbao, NotebookLM, Poe, AI Studio, Google AI Overviews — 14 platforms.

If you only use ChatGPT, this difference doesn’t matter. If you also pull from Perplexity or NotebookLM for research, or Kimi/Qwen if you’re in China, Chat2Doc doesn’t help.

Export formats

Chat2Doc: PDF, Word (.docx), Markdown, JSON, CSV — 5 formats. Word is Pro.

ChatExport AI: PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), Markdown, plain text, JSON, CSV, HTML, screenshot PNG, share card PNG, ZIP archive — 11 formats. Word is free.

ChatExport AI also writes directly to Notion (no copy-paste step), which Chat2Doc doesn’t do. Excel export is unique to ChatExport AI — useful for turning tabular AI responses into spreadsheets.

Selective export

Chat2Doc: Whole-conversation export only on free tier. Selective message export is Pro.

ChatExport AI: Per-message checkboxes on free tier. Pick any subset — questions only, answers only, specific exchanges. No paywall.

This is the single biggest functional gap. Long conversations have noise. Being able to export only the parts worth keeping, free, matters.

Account requirement

Chat2Doc: Requires sign-up before the extension is usable. Their “Workspace” model.

ChatExport AI: No account, ever. Install, click, export.

If you bounce off login walls, this matters.

Chat2Doc empty workspace screen — Development Preview Environment placeholder, no UI until you sign in
What Chat2Doc shows you before login — an empty workspace placeholder. Nothing to click. No export until you create an account.

Project export (ChatGPT Projects, Claude Projects)

Chat2Doc: Not supported.

ChatExport AI Pro: Exports every conversation in a ChatGPT or Claude Project, plus every uploaded attachment and every AI-generated artifact, packaged as one organised ZIP with a manifest.

If you organise serious work into Projects, this is currently the only tool that handles it.

Privacy

Both claim local-only processing. Both are accurate as far as I can tell.

Chat2Doc: One narrow server call for Pro license check. Their privacy declaration to the Chrome Web Store says they handle “Website content” — meaning the extension reads page content (necessary for export, but worth noting). Account model means they have your email.

ChatExport AI: One narrow server call for Pro license check (encrypted device fingerprint, no name or email). Privacy declaration covers “Authentication information” only — narrower scope. No account means no email collected.

Pricing

Chat2Doc: Free with unspecified limits. Pro for Word export and selective export — pricing not transparently published.

ChatExport AI: Free with 5 exports/day. Pro at $2.99/month or $24.99/year for unlimited exports plus full project export. Cancel anytime via LemonSqueezy.

Layout templates and TOC

Chat2Doc: Pre-built “Academic” and “Minimal” templates, auto-generated table of contents, customisable font size and margins.

ChatExport AI: 5 themes (Default, Dark, Academic, Minimal, Colorful), no auto-TOC in the current version.

If auto-TOC matters for your workflow, Chat2Doc wins this specific feature.

Where Chat2Doc is the right choice

  • You only use ChatGPT (or one of: Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok).
  • You always export the whole conversation, never a subset.
  • You want auto-generated TOC in PDFs out of the box.
  • You’re fine creating an account.

Where ChatExport AI is the right choice

  • You use more than one AI platform, especially Perplexity, Copilot, Kimi, NotebookLM, AI Overviews, or Chinese models.
  • You want to cherry-pick which messages to export.
  • You don’t want a signup wall.
  • You need Notion sync, Excel export, share cards, or ZIP bundles.
  • You organise work into ChatGPT or Claude Projects and want to export them whole.

Try them

Both are on the Chrome Web Store. Install both, run a real export on a real conversation, see which fits your workflow. That’s the only test that matters.
